Reflections on Innocence - Full Score & development.

The starting point for the composition 'Reflections on Innocence' was the simple Hirajoshi scale:

also known as the Semitonal Pentatonic and is the usual tuning scale for the strings of the Japanese Koto. from this I developed the first motif from the five available notes:

A slight variation in tonality and development of the first bar gave me the second motif:

which developed and modulated to:

A third motif was created by reversing , modulating and developing the first motif, which became:

Using manuscript paper and the piano, the whole structure was then created out of these short sections. This can be seen and heard here:

Spiked. (Jazz-Funk piece)

Spiked - Tunecode 119474EU.
Funk style having a slight jazz influence to it fitting into sub-genre of jazz-funk. Instrumentation being bass, piano, kit & guitar. Melody provided by trumpet & muted trumpets.
As with all funk numbers the bass guitar provides a repetitive riff, the piano hitting out chords always on count '1' on the 1st bar & anticipated by a half beat on bars 2, 3 & 4. Snare always on beats 2 & 4. The guitar was added for more texture and in anticipating the 4th beat of the bar suggesting a polyrhythmic sound. Rhythm is everything in funk and the melody line has little importance and not much variation. Triplets and sidestepping have been used in the melody and the almost improvisational approach emphasizes the jazz feel.
The term funk was originally used in the 1950's to describe a style of modern jazz which concentrated on swing and soul and in C. T. Brown's words "...is an attitude, which when expressed musically transforms the listener into a particular mood, usually described as laid-back or mellow...".
Key artists from this genre are 'The Brand New Heavies', 'Jamiroquai', 'Earth, Wind & Fire', 'Kool & the Gang'...etc.
