The starting point for the composition 'Reflections on Innocence' was the simple Hirajoshi scale:
also known as the Semitonal Pentatonic and is the usual tuning scale for the strings of the Japanese Koto. from this I developed the first motif from the five available notes:
A slight variation in tonality and development of the first bar gave me the second motif:
which developed and modulated to:
A third motif was created by reversing , modulating and developing the first motif, which became:
Using manuscript paper and the piano, the whole structure was then created out of these short sections. This can be seen and heard here:
